Introduction
Ever since I finished grad school in 2020, working in the UK has been a permanent fixture on my bucket list. But let’s be real: making it happen is a marathon. You have to juggle visa hurdles, tight budgets, and the daunting task of job hunting in a foreign market.
As an international candidate, searching for work overseas is a test of courage. I spent nearly three years “role-playing” this move in my head and building my skills before I finally took the leap.
Why the UK?
- A mature tech ecosystem with endless resources.
- A lifestyle I’ve grown to love.
- The “Sign”: I applied for the YMS visa four times and was selected three times. Winning it on my very last eligible year felt like destiny.
The YMS Visa: Application & Hacks
The Basics
- Eligibility: You must apply before you turn 31.
- Quota: 1,000 slots per year for Taiwan (split into two draws).
- Financial Buffer: You need at least £2,530 in your account, held for 28 consecutive days.
- Official Info: UK Gov Youth Mobility
The Bank Statement Trap
Don’t just provide a “balance certificate.” The UK government requires a full statement showing the money hasn’t dipped below the threshold for the entire 28-day period. I used First Bank (iLeo) and had it translated by a pro—highly recommended for speed.
Budgeting for Your Dream
Since job hunting abroad is full of “unknowns,” I saved up a three-month safety net. Having financial peace of mind allowed me to enjoy the “holiday” part of the working holiday while staying focused on the search.
Total Budget: Approx. 400,000 TWD
(Covers flights, insurance, rent, and fixed costs back in Taiwan.)
The UK Job Hunt: Strategy
Resume & LinkedIn Optimization
In the UK, your CV and LinkedIn are your primary weapons.
- Keep it Tight: Max 2 pages. Clear skills, clear impact.
- Be Literal: If the JD asks for a “Frontend Engineer,” don’t call yourself a “Web Architect.” Use the terminology they use.
- Keyword Matching: Recruiters use software to scan for keywords. Make sure yours match the JD.
- Networking: Reach out to people at your target companies. A referral is worth ten cold applications.
The Typical Interview Flow
- The Screener: A quick call with HR or a recruiter to check your vibes and visa status.
- Technical Test: Usually a Take-home assignment (3–7 days) or a live coding challenge.
- The Behavioral: A chat about your experience using the STAR method. This is often where you discuss your technical assignment and explain why you made certain decisions.
The Reality Check
The biggest hurdle? The two-year visa limit. Many companies see “Working Holiday” and immediately hit you with a “Thank you, but no.”
I sent out over 160 applications, got 12 phone screenings, and reached the final stage with two companies. I finally landed my offer in late July. My routine was applying to 10–20 jobs every morning, then hitting the gym or exploring London to avoid job search burnout.
Closing Thoughts
I only worked in London for a month before deciding to move on, and while that sounds short, I don’t regret it for a second. The industry wasn’t the right fit for me, and I felt I was wasting my most precious resource: time.
If you’re eyeing a YMS move, go for it. Everyone’s journey is different. Experience the UK for yourself. Even if you change your mind later, you’ll have gained a perspective that you can’t get from a textbook.
“You only get to experience life at your current age once.”
Back in Taiwan, I found a role that perfectly matches my goals within a month. I’m still coding, still learning, and still moving toward my next adventure.
