The Experience
“Between jobs” anxiety is a universal experience. In many cultures, we are taught to work hard from a young age without being taught how to actually find ourselves. When we suddenly find ourselves without a title or a schedule, it can feel like the ground is disappearing.
But a career gap is just a “fork in the road.” It’s an opportunity to recalibrate. I’ve transitioned from developer to project manager and back again—and every gap was where the most growth happened.
The 5 Stages of the Job Hunt
1. The Exit Strategy (Pre-Resignation)
If you’re planning to quit, make sure your Financial Safety Net is ready (6–12 months of expenses). Also, make a “Life Bucket List”—the things you can’t do while working 9-to-5.
2. The Gap Phase
This is your “Self-Discovery” time. Use it to rebuild your habits. Wake up at a normal time, exercise, and focus on one thing you’ve always wanted to learn.
3. The “Hunt” (CVs & Interviews)
Don’t just spray and pray. Target roles that have specific domain requirements. When you interview, arrive early and always have two smart questions ready for the end. It shows you’re actually interested.
4. The Decision (Managing Offers)
When the offers start coming in, don’t just look at the salary. Ask: “Does this company culture align with my 5-year goal?” Use this time to be picky.
5. The Fresh Start (Onboarding)
Use your “honeymoon phase” at the new job to set up your systems. Build your email templates and work logs now so you can hit the ground running.
5 Ways to Productively “Wait”
- Find Your ‘Main & Sub’ Skills: Don’t just be an “Engineer.” Be an “Engineer who understands Content Marketing.” This unique combination makes you much harder to replace.
- Read & Learn Daily: I spent my gap month taking courses on Hex School. It kept my skills sharp and my mind busy.
- Write it Down: Writing is thinking. Summarize what you’ve learned or document your journey. It builds your Personal Brand.
- The “Body Over Mind” Rule: When the anxiety gets too high, move your body. A 30-minute Tabata session or a hike can reset your entire nervous system.
- The Interview Roadmap: Map out the common technical and behavioral questions. Practice them until they feel like a natural conversation.
Conclusion
Whether you left your job voluntarily or not, don’t let the “void” swallow you. Happiness isn’t found in a job title; it’s found in the progress you make every day.
